Leadership Hendricks County recently welcomed its 20th class of local residents eager to participate in the leadership development program.

The class, a balanced cross-section of the county, is chosen by a committee which examines factors such as where members live, professional backgrounds, occupations, and past community involvement. The organization received a significant number of applications; more than the 25-member class can accommodate. Suzanne Whicker, executive director, stated “We’re pleased to see that the caliber of applicants again this year was extremely high. I say that every year, but it’s extremely encouraging to see so many highly-qualified community members interested in learning more about our county.”.

The 2012 class began recently with an opening retreat in Brown County, where class members had the opportunity to get to know one another and learn more about themselves, leadership styles, and the challenges facing the county. Each participant was assigned to a Team Discovery project that addresses a need in Hendricks County. This year’s class will meet monthly to expand their understanding of the county and sharpen their leadership skills before graduating in November.

Attendees of the Leadership Hendricks County Annual “Super” Tailgate Reunion, held January 26 at the Event Center @ Metropolis, participated in honoring a local high school student and a well-respected member of our community.

Dr. John Sparzo, last year’s Leader of the Year, presented this year’s award to Bart Beal, Vice President, Local Government and Community Relations for Duke Energy. Beal has served on the Plainfield Community School Board of Trustees for more than a decade, and has served as a co-chair for the United Way’s annual fund drive, in addition to other community involvement. Sparzo shared that Beal is principled and considerate in his leadership style, and those who know him would say he possesses the rare ability to disagree without becoming disagreeable. Beal, visibly surprised with the award, humbly accepted and thanked those who had nominated him.

The Youth Leader of the Year Award was presented by Natalie Rose, LHC Program Coordinator, to Taylor Patterson, who participated in Youth Leadership Hendricks County, is currently involved in Youth Encouraging Philanthropy, and has been involved in leadership activities throughout her four years at Tri-West High School.

LEADERS OF THE YEAR ANNOUNCED AT LEADERSHIP HENDRICKS COUNTY’S ANNUAL MEETING

Attendees of the Leadership Hendricks County Annual Meeting, held January 13 at Five Star Catering at Primo, participated in honoring a local high school student and two well-respected members of our community.

Donnis Mizelle, last year’s Leader of the Year, presented this year’s award to Dr. John Sparzo, Vice President of Medical Affairs for Hendricks Regional Health. Mizelle shared that Sparzo has “the capacity to translate vision into reality” – a quote from Warren Bennis. He further stated that Sparzo volunteers his time to Hendricks County Parks, HCCVB, Sheltering Wings, Avon Education Foundation and many other organizations. Sparzo thanked the group for the award, and stated, “Leadership Hendricks County helped me realize the wonderful sense of community in Hendricks County”.

Kent McPhail, Plainfield Chamber of Commerce Executive Director, was presented with the Distinguished Service Award for his many contributions to Hendricks County. Bart Beal, Director, Community Relations & Economic Development for Duke Energy, presented the award to McPhail, and stated that he is a man of integrity with an incredible work ethic who took a struggling chamber organization many years ago and turned it into an efficiently-run chamber, serving the needs of its many members. McPhail shared his love of Plainfield and the community, and thanked his wife Donna for her support.

The Youth Leader of the Year Award was presented by Natalie Rose, LHC Program Coordinator, to Kristen Anderson, who participated in Youth Leadership Hendricks County and is currently involved in Youth Encouraging Philanthropy and the youth board of advisors for the Mental Health Association.

Bob Walters, director of Friendly Planet Missiology, was the keynote speaker. Missiology, Walters stated, is the study of a church’s mission, action or activities. He stated that his ministry is “a very light touch to some of the world’s most pressing issues”. Walters then spoke about his work in eastern Congo, and how his group’s mission is to build peace. Walters stated, “Peace building requires every bit of intention, courage and strategy as does waging war. We already have one case study to show that it can be done, and to show how we can do it”.
